The onesided- ness of Hahnloser’s and Frankl’ s interpretations is gradually giving way to a more balanced view and to new questioning about the nature and purpose of Villard’s.

Our detailed codicological investigation of the Villard portfolio offers evidence that Hahnloser was incorrect in asserting that so many leaves have been lost, and corrects the persistent view that those which remain have been extensively rearranged 8.

These slits were never used for unlike other single leaves which contain stretched holes where these leaves were formerly sewn into the portfolio. At least one French scholar went along with Hahnloser’s Bauhiittenbuch designation: The original purpose of the album is the subject of controversy. In what sequence did Villard originally arrange his leaves within the quires? The sequence shown is that encountered from left to right on the folios and is not chronological.

Et si troveres le force de le portraiture les trais ensi corne li ars de iometrie le commande et ensaigne. First, the codicological evidence does not support Hahnloser’s hypothesis that approximately half of the original leaves of the portfolio have been lost.

There is no discernible evidence of a drawing extending from fol. It is strongly associated with the drawings of Villard de Honnecourt and has one of the best acoustics I have ever experienced. Debord was wanting to destroy the old art of Europe including burning down the cathedralswhilst at the same time he was in tears about the demolition of the old Les Halles quarter in Paris.

Using dark ink and writing in a hurried and rather crude hand, this anonymous paginator, whom we call C, lettered fols. You may view this DjVu file here online.

When did the portfolio become a villars This arrangement would have made it possible to secure the loose parchment leaves in the portfolio while Villard travelled. There is little iconographie continuity in this quire. This S and the following I and V may have been written with a different pen, giving an uncharacteristic appearance to these three letters in Mancel’s pagination scheme.

This leaf was therefore always the first leaf of this quire. Hoonnecourt is one other curious piece of evidence that may confirm this hypothesis. These inscriptions lw added after Villard’ s ordering of the quires was completed, as is evident from those inscriptions which refer to a drawing on a facing page that df not the other leaf of the bifolio on which the inscription occurs With the singers I will be endeavouring to make our debut at Cuenca a real ecstatic experience for the public.

The comparison with practice involved in music from this time, especially with the Gothic line is one easily made: We are face-to-face with the sequence of quires Villard himself desired and arranged. Nowhere is this more evident than on Ossuairesthe first of three dee recordings created around the travels and shadowy biography of a certain Villard de Honnecourt, a 13th century draughtsman, whose carnet or portfolio is still in existence.

Your recording of Ossuaires represents the first of a trilogy associated with Villard de Honnecourt.

This assemblage of portfolio and leaves is commonly termed an album in French and a sketchbook in English. This thesis was possible only because Hahnloser reorganized the quires and hypothetically filled in gaps to create a more systematic and thorough schema for Villard than is present in the portfolio now or could have been present in it originally.

This speculative aspect of his ed is to be as greatly regretted as his methodical analyses are to be praised, for his publication established, first in the scholarly literature of medieval art history, then through misinformation transmitted to several generations of students, two fundamental errors concerning the Villard drawings.

This may be proof that in this one instance, at least, Villard bought used parchment. There have been no losses from this quire which is, despite its small size, logically arranged: What made you feel that they could be all connected into one unity?

Quire V is, and originally was, a small assemblage of but two leaves: We know nothing whatsoever. The film is a work of fiction and the result of a brainstorming session on how to present jonnecourt musical repertories around Villard de Honnecourt. What are you setting out to achieve with the film?

This is definitely not about the question of whether ornaments were added or not, or if this or that ornament was appropriate to the style. Probably this has villaed do with our specific approach to repertories and traditions.

The catapult drawing was on the verso of the missing leaf, where it faced Villard’s catapult plan and inscription on fol. Carneg is always culture that destroys culture Mexico has years, Jamaica has 95 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years.

There is no loss of leaves from this quire. In summary form, the 13th-century linkages between the quires are these:
