Okay, This was a bit makimg, but in the end I actually feel like it was worth it. So when I heard about these books, I was excited. I would relate this book to reading the childhood story of your favorite role model, hero, celebrity – except my “hero” was a fictional character, in a fantasy world, who kept my imagination soaring to new heights.

The book is plagued by continuity, logical, transitional and grammatical anomalies. Any sense of suspense is non-existent as he goes from one quest to the next usually with someone helping him along pf on his own he’s pretty useless. There is no connection between them, and in a way they are all independent communities there is no concept of democracy or a republic in the Forgotten Realms, which is very disappointing since Republics have been in existence for a very long time — in fact I have never seen the word republic used in conjuction with the Forgotten Realms, despite it having been a part of our vocabulary, since at least Plato.
I’ve read far-worse written books about characters I love and care about deeply, following them through 10 of elmimster series and watched as the author got bored of the writing. Infinitely better than Elminster There was no feeling in the performance, his reading cadence was cumbersome and he barely varied his tone to indicate different characters. I love this series so much, i bought them all.

However, I hated Elminster so much that I created a Daleland called Darkdale that existed in a cavern underneath Shadowdale where Elminster lives and made it a complete opposite of Shadowdale, right down to the powerful, evil, undead sorcerer that lived there. Salvatore novel recounts the origins of Salvatore’s signature dark elf character, Drizzt Do’Urden. Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually think Greenwood has writing talent, and imagination, it is just that his talent tends not to flow on to writing novels.

Beware, JFi – I may yet dupe you into reading Trekkie slash-fic. I think Ed had a great concept I had high hopes for this book. The book is plagued by continuity, logical, This was an interesting, if somewhat disjointedly and hastily written, edited and thought out book.
Ed Greenwood is a prolific writer with an excellent style, and I absorbed each of his Elminsster novels, soaking in the superb storytelling strengths this author brings to the table.

So WTF is this “stirring” of which male authors so fondly write? Too bad it doesn’t take place in the Forgotten Realms: I kind of even enjoyed some of the parts when he is a thief.

It felt like someone ponderously reading a book to me instead ,age someone performing a story. Yes, Ed Greenwood might not be an amalgam of Shakespeare and Hemingway, but that doesn’t make him “a bad writer”.

At this point, of course, it is much to late to protest that it is a Bad Book, that it is Written Very Poorly, that I find it Profoundly Stupid – because I was caught reading it rather than caught pitching it disgustedly against the wall. That said, the narrator was awful.
Ed Greenwood wrote Elminster: Before I started this book, I read some of the bad reviews and I foolishly thought, “It can’t be that bad! If you are a Forgotten Pf reader or roleplayer you have off this name and likely marveled at his abilities as the protector of Shadowdale, keeper of the lore and defender of Mystra’s might.
Elminster’s history is critical to a proper understanding of Forgotten Realms. In these ancient days, Elminster is but a shepherd boy, dreaming of adventure and heroics. With patience and grit, Elminster sets about to change all that.
