Over the past 30 years Capcom has created many very memorable characters. The “Capcom 30th Anniversary Character Encyclopedia” celebrates Capcom’s 30 years in charactter industry and gives fans concise information about every major Capcom character, their key artwork, statistics, background information, and interesting notes on the history of each character and game franchise.
But it’s a seriously missed opportunity.

In this encyclopedia, over Capcom characters are covered. If you’ve played video games then there’s a good chance you’ve played a Capcom game. Folks may also take issue with Morrigan’s profile which seems to have been 30ty by a sentient erection and Poison’s write-up which describes the character as “seemingly female” as off-putting.

The book itself visually appealing with nice illustrations and vibrant color. Featured in the book are usual cast of characters from Street FighterMegamanDarkstalkersResident EvilDeadrisingand many more from other games I’ve not even heard of. Robot Master Field Guide Paperback. Dare I say, even one that you read while in the restroom when you forget to bring your phone with you. It’s a love letter to Capcom, and fun to read through. Weirdly enough, the only black man in the book is Balrog, which speaks to both Capcom’s lack of black men in their games, and the potential preferences of the book’s publisher.
For example, it makes more sense to utilize an anime style for the bright and happy Mega Man, but changing it up to a more realistic 3D rendered style when creating artwork for the horror-inspired Dino Crisis series. There’s a problem loading this menu right now. I just wish their was more of it, perhaps two pages per encyyclopedia so we could have more illustrations or sketches. On the whole, it’s a heartfelt, thorough tribute to one of gaming’s most prolific and influential publishers.
Including almost characters from the Capcom family, this “Character Encyclopedia” sheds new light on these characters in a way nothing else does!
