The ending was in some ways a turnaround from my expectations so this was a good and unexpected thing and took away some of the earlier discomfort and unease I felt. So, Joe seduces Ella and they have to do their thing behind Leslie’s back. I felt a devastating sense of loss for something which I had never had, and it didn’t occur to me that that something was a thing which no one ever possesses for the simple reason that it is something which is created in being seen and which exists only for the spectator without whom it could never become an object to tantalize.
The book is probably Trocchi’s most well-known, and I imagine it was very scandalous at the time it was publishedbut for the most part I didn’t really understand the hype.
And maybe it was revolutionary at the time, but the observations about the judiciary etc all feel rather adolescent.

They create difficult situations and respond to cause with resignation, moving on from one life to another as others impact on their homes, relationships and economic circumstances.
On a desolate stretch trocchj canal a couple of miles south of Glasgow city centre, actors are being rounded up, a scene is being shot for a film and, just possibly, a literary reputation is being revived. He is with Leslie his business partner.

I’ve always found the Beats quite magnetic – the work itself, and the muscular element of the writing, not just the mystique. This is not a light read but it is a very good read! The story rev I picked alecander this book because most of the reviewers said that it reminded them of The Outsider by Albert Camus. The story is about a person who discovers a dead woman floating in the river. I don’t like that terrible self-centeredness of the outsider, that attitude of ‘this is how I’m living my life’.
Grove Press- Fiction – pages. I learned more about Joe as the story progressed, more than I sometimes felt comfortable about, but it was impossible to not want to know how he would trocxhi up.
Meanwhile, an unspoken attraction has developed between Joe and the wife of the barge skipper. The youngg pacing is rather slow, which appears to mirror the slowness of the barge itself that both Leslie and Jack work and live on.
